What is skin pigmentation?

Skin pigmentation is something the wide majority of people have. Whether it’s in the form of spots, blotches, or vascular lesions, the extra pigments in your skin stand out against your normal skin tone.

While many skin pigments are there from birth, some appear because of sun damage, pregnancy, and other later occurrences in life. Some common skin pigmentation issues include:

  • Age spots
  • Vascular lesions
  • Spider veins
  • Rosacea
  • Freckles
  • Sun damage
  • Hyperpigmentation

Some skin pigmentation issues, like hyperpigmentation and age spots, show up because of excessive melanin in your skin. Melanin is a pigment your skin naturally produces for its overall tone.

How can I get rid of skin pigmentation?

SimplySkin Laser Center offers skin pigmentation treatments using Lumecca™, an intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy. It works by breaking apart the excessive pigments in your skin using bright flashes of light. Unlike lasers, IPL emits a wide spectrum of light wavelengths at the same time instead of just one.

IPL is unique because it targets deeper cells in your skin without harming cells on the surface. The treatment is gentle and involves little or no downtime, so you can go right back to work or tend to other responsibilities right away when you leave the office.

What should I expect during skin pigmentation treatments?

Your provider can describe the treatment in detail during your consultation, so you know exactly what to expect. They also tell you what you must do to prepare, like avoiding direct sun exposure for a few weeks before your procedure.

When you arrive for your treatment, your provider may apply topical anesthesia to the areas you intend to target. They might also apply a cooling gel to your skin. Your provider then presses the IPL device against your skin to deliver powerful pulses of light directly to the area.

You can expect the treatment to take around 20 minutes, more or less. Most people benefit from getting 4-6 IPL sessions with 3-6 weeks of healing time between each of them.
